Overview
If you have multiple accounts on your iPhone (such as iCloud, Gmail, or Microsoft 365), you can choose which one is used as your default contacts list. Setting a default ensures new contacts are automatically saved to the correct account.
Step 1 - Open Settings
- On your iPhone, tap Settings
- Scroll down and tap Apps
- From the list of installed apps, tap Contacts
Step 2 - Choose Default Account
- In the Contacts settings, tap Default Account
- You will see a list of all contact accounts connected to your iPhone (for example, iCloud, Exchange, or Gmail)
- Tap the account you want to use as your default contacts list
Step 3 - Verify Contacts Are Saving to the Correct List
- Open the Contacts app
- Create a new contact and save it
- Confirm the new contact appears under the correct account by tapping Lists (or Groups) in the top corner and selecting only the account you want to review
Managing Multiple Accounts (Optional)
If you use multiple contact accounts (for example, work and personal), you can view all contacts together or filter by account:
- Open the Contacts app
- Tap Lists or Groups depending on your iOS version
- Select which account lists you want visible
Notes
- The Default Account option only appears if you have more than one contact account added to your device
- If you remove or disable an account, contacts from that account will no longer appear in the Contacts app
- This process applies to iPhone and iPad running iOS 17 or later, where the Contacts app is accessed through Settings > Apps
